Marcos has 25 years training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and is the head instructor of the NYC Machado Jiu-Jitsu Academy. He has helped train the Rua Brothers, Randy "The Natural" Couture and Danny Inosanto, among others.

After competing on the Ultimate Fighter 6 Joe opened a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu academy named "Scarola Jiu Jitsu", which is also known as "Gracie Barra Long Island" located in New Hyde Park, Long Island, New York and Commack, Long Island, New York.
